NEWS

Autograph a baseball

Folks,

Okay, we are heading to Austin even though SXSW has been cancelled. We have shows before and after the festival. Including the Luck Reunion Festival in Luck, TX. All the performers appearing at the Luck Reunion festival get Luck Rings. In fact, we were all fitted for rings. So, we want our rings. And as Daniel says, all those tacos and all that BBQ ain’t gonna eat itself.

So much to talk about. So little newsletter. This is a good time to tell you that I will be sharing all kind of details in these emails long before I share them on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Those platforms are for punks (Not the good kind of punks). This newsletter is the real deal. So tell your friends. Or not. You know, if you just want it to be “our thing,” that’s okay too.

All the reaction and nice words about The Land That Time Forgot and the “Marathon” single/video has been music to my ears. You know me, I read all your e-mails. And re-read the good ones every morning for ten or fifteen minutes just to get my day going.

Would this be the right time to tell you that you can pre-order it now? (LP comes out May 15th on Yep Roc Records Tapes and Health Aids.) You can get free shipping on the CD and LP if you pre-order through Yep Roc directly. The First Edition LP comes on red vinyl, too. Pre-order/listen to “Marathon” here: https://ffm.to/landtimeforgot

And we’ve got another single coming down the pike. So watch this space.

Beyond that, we’ve got tour dates. And yes, some UK dates coming down the line too. They love to put butter on their sandwiches over there. And you know what? We’re okay with that.

Meanwhile, Austin is a great place to eat a taco. And we’re headed to Texas for a mess of shows around SXSW.

What else? Oh yeah. Don’t forget to wash your hands. Wash your hands before you go to the bathroom. Wash your hands after you go to the bathroom. Pick up a check. Put a check down. Wash your hands. And don’t forget to wash your hands. Autograph a baseball. Wash your hands. Close your eyes and touch your ear. Wash your hands. Pop an anti-depressant. Throw another log on the fire escape. Wash your hands. Wash your hands. And if you can, wash somebody else’s hands too. Oh, and get an earthquake kit, or pick up a cheeseball at the market on your way home from work in case of a zombie apocalypse. But rule #1: Live your life. And don’t forget to take out the trash.

And if you think I’m not serious, here’s a piece in the New York Times Stephanie just sent this to me from the other room about how to not touch your face. I once went an entire five minutes without touching my face. How to Stop Touching Your Face: https://tinyurl.com/sfvqx8z

And here’s a great piece by Denise Sullivan about the tribute we all did for Roy Loney the other night. I still can’t believe I’ll never see him walking down he street again. I really can’t. “A remembrance of Roy Loney and his surviving rock’n’ roll family” – Denise Sullivan https://tinyurl.com/rd55s88

Got it?

Oh, and did I mention that you can watch/stream “Marathon,” and pre-order The Land That Time Forgot: https://ffm.to/landtimeforgot

One more time! TOUR DATES! Over here and over there. Lots of them. Scroll down for more on that.

I may not touch my face all day. I’m on a not-touching-my-face roll. Without a mirror handy I sometimes find myself wondering if I still even have a face. But Stephanie knows best, so I’ll take that chance.

Onwards,

-C

PS: Oh and you heard it here first. I can barely say it, but there’s a CP biography coming. A kind of CP owners manual by Stevie Simkin going right back to the Green On Red days. Chuck went here. Chuck went there. Chuck stood on the corner. Looked left. Looked right. Fun and seriousness aside, it’s an incredibly well researched tour de force of a book and Stevie has put much love and care into it. And my haters should know that it’s not all flattering either. I believe Stevie is over in Winchester putting the finishing touches on it now, taking out semi-colons and capitalizing the names of towns like Sheffield. And all kinds of other grammatical whatnot.

NAKED AND AFRAID

Folks,

You heard it here first (unless you didn’t). I’ve got a new record coming out on May 15 called “The Land That Time Forgot.” On Yep Roc Records. In fact, today’s the day we’re releasing the first single,“Marathon,” complete with a swanky video directed by Darrell Flowers and edited by Lauren Tabak which features some fancy footwork from me and Stephie as we trade punches.

Watch/stream “Marathon,” and pre-order the album here: https://ffm.to/landtimeforgot

What can I tell you? I can tell you this:

I wasn’t too pleased to learn that Jason Isbell is releasing his new record the very same day as mine.

So I sent a message to Jason and said, “I think it’s only fair that you change your release date.”

He replied and got straight to the point: “Chuck, you know I can’t do that.”

So I said, “You know Jason, I don’t know how this makes me feel. Actually I DO know how it makes me feel. It makes me feel like Amy Klobuchar. I mean I’m in the running and everything but I feel like people treat me as if I’m the person that runs the concession stand at a Little League game. I’m a serious artist, Jason!”

(As you can see, we’re on a first-name basis.)

Well, he calmed me down and reasoned, “Chuck, at least we will get people to the polls. I mean the record stores. And once they get in there they can vote however they like. It’s their country. Or their record collection as the case might be. Maybe they buy Jason Isbell, maybe they buy Chuck Klobuchar.”

That hurt a little, I won’t lie.

But on reflection I thought it sounded pretty reasonable. And reminded myself that Jason is younger and better looking and he probably knows a thing or three.

[DISCLAIMER: This interchange is as I recall it. Jason may not remember it this way. But it definitely happened.]

So, what about this new record? Rock ‘n’ roll has always been about hope and despair, falling apart and picking up the pieces, romance and heartbreak, whistling past the graveyard with a bad moon rising. And San Francisco is all of those things. A place of new beginnings and reinventing yourself married just lately to a bottomless pit of greed filled with robots with ironic haircuts.

When it came to recording, we were priced out of our home turf and ended up in a studio a few miles from the Vermont border where I could hear myself think – which was pretty f*cking scary! Recording with some rock and roll royalty who dressed like lumberjacks in a big old mansion that’s on the National Historic Register.

Musically speaking, this is a radical departure for me. I usually lean on the Rockpile by way of Highway 61 template more than Alison Krauss. But this record has a lot of acoustic energy. It’s a folk record even, in spots. All that with a heaping scoop of Stephanie Finch jump, jiving and harmonizing her way down that old fair lane.

klipschutz and I had a lot of lunches and arguments. You don’t want to know how sausage is made, I assume (though it’s actually kind of fascinating, but whatever). So what can I say about the first single “Marathon”? It’s seems kind of nostalgic. But it’s not. Once you get past the krautrock bassline and The Everly Brothers acoustics and the relentless groove of The Mission Express, it’s a song about Depression era dances with roots in the Salem Witch Trials and the anxiety of anyone today who’s short on rent again. The gig economy. Reality shows. Exploitation. Dance marathons of the Great Depression were the first reality shows. And like Pro Wrestling, blurred the line between theatre and reality. Okay, I’ll spare you any more MFA gibberish, I gotta run. I got the Discovery Channel on and Naked and Afraid is up next.

Again, watch/stream “Marathon,” and pre-order the album here: https://ffm.to/landtimeforgot

Oh, and we’ve got TOUR DATES too!

Just about everything

I’m lying around my hotel room. And I’ve got the cable TV going. Cameras are following Sting and Trudie as they parade about their 400-year-old Italian villa. For Sting and Trudie, the villa is a “summer house.” For you and me, it’s available too! As a thousand-dollar an hour Airbnb apparently. You know, for weddings and birthdays and Oscar parties and that kind of thing. They’ve even got their own honeybees on the property. There’s a vineyard too. And they make their own wine. The wines are named after Sting songs: “Roxanne,” “Message in a Bottle.” Sting says, “Sexy name, sexy wine.”

They ask Sting what he loves about the place, and he says, “Just about everything.”

I decide I’ve seen about enough - turn that off and fire up some music. I turn off the lights and put on headphones and dial up Radioooooo: http://radiooooo.com, an app I got turned on to by Tommy Dunbar. It turns your phone screen into a globe. Click anywhere on the map and hear music from that region or country. Like a musical treasure map. Click on Sweden for example, and pick a decade in the twentieth century, and a mood (fast, slow, weird). Boom! Here comes the weird 60s Swedish jams. Sixties Thailand is another favorite. 50s Italian pop. German disco from the 70s. Algerian Afro Cuban highlife jams from the 80s have the coolest guitarists (Cheba Fadela? Unreal!!!). Roland must have sold every one of those guitarists a JC-120 amp.

Radioooooo is magic. I don’t know who curates this stuff, but I’m spellbound. I may not be chilling in a private jet stocked with Dom Pérignon 30,000 feet above my next gig, but I’m out here by the interstate in my lonely room and I’m f*cking time-traveling. I don’t know what could make it better. Maybe a glass of “Roxanne?” No chance! My sexy wine days are behind me! But, no newsletter would be complete without a call back.

Meanwhile, I’m on to another joint. Even breaking in some songs from “The Land That Time Forgot.” (You heard it here first.) Without a band behind me. No net. Just a man and his guitar, and hopefully a sound guy or gal. Throw in a bartender and doorman and you in the audience, and the guy trying not to look at his cell phone so obviously, and me trying to remember where I left my wallet, and the owner of the club with a second mortgage on it, and we’re in business. Monkey business. Hope to see you out there.

PS: In case it got past you, I filmed a travel show for Southwest Air and Luck Reunion. A kind of Anthony Bourdain styled show where you can ride shotgun with me and Aaron Lee Tasjan through the backstreets of San Francisco. The Luck Reunion team are brilliant. This ain’t some insidious internet trash. There are real production values. I think you’ll enjoy it. https://southwest.fm/sites-and-sounds/episode-3/
