Chuck Prophet: News http://chuckprophet.com/news/ Official website of musician Chuck Prophet. Journal, news, tour dates, photos, discography, biography, forum, music videos, concert tickets, and more. en daniel@truecho.com Copyright 2024 2024-03-07T00:06:00+00:00 Our Austin bromance is alive and well | I’ll be curating a Music Festival in Guerneville, CA o http://chuckprophet.com/site/our-austin-bromance-is-alive-and-well-ill-be-curating-a-music-festival-in-g http://chuckprophet.com/site/our-austin-bromance-is-alive-and-well-ill-be-curating-a-music-festival-in-g#When:00:06:00Z Friends, We, the men and woman of The Mission Express, are headed out to Texas for a run of dates. Asking the eternal question: Is Austin still a great place to eat a taco? Even after the attack of the tech monsters? We suspect it is. Our Austin bromance is alive and well. We love it. Three shows at the Continental Club on South Congress. Including a Sunday matinee. And shows at the Mucky Duck in Houston, SoCo Stomp, C-Boy’s Heart & Soul, and the Hill Country roadhouse known as the Devil’s Backbone. A place to experience music the way Bob Dylan described it: “Music is meant to be heard in rooms with wood walls.” Or something like that. Oh wait, HERE IT IS, from the Nobel Prize winner’s mouth: “The best sound you can get is an intimate clubroom, with four walls where the sound just bounces. That’s the way this music is meant to be heard.” –Bob Dylan, June 2006 We continue to run those cables out into the audience, hoping to keep the circuits connected. One gig at a time. Have you heard the rumors about the Summertime Thing Festival. Yessir, I’ll be curating a Music Festival in Guerneville, CA on Saturday, June 29. We’re not quite ready to up and announce all the confirmed acts. But, many won’t be strangers to anyone who follows this newsletter. OK, now this may not be the biggest festival out there. But if you like Chuck Prophet music, it just might be the best. (Who knows, you might want to show up in your best shirt.) Seriously, how long could I resist getting in on the Festival fun? We have some surprises in store for you. There’ll be legends. And pioneers. Next Generation weirdos, too. Plus a couple acts you’ve never heard of, I’m sure. But this is for realzzzz. So think about joining us among the towering redwoods, at the the Rio Nido Roadhouse in Guerneville, CA. You can sit inside or out. There will be two stages. Gonna be a cool hang. That much I know. Tickets for Summertime Thing are now on sale. So grab ‘em while you can. And book yourself a room for a night or two in Rio Nido or Guerneville. Get up to the minute details on live shows and other goings on in all the usual places. Proving that there’s more to life than Premium Netflix and Starbuck’s Oatmeal. Live in-the-flesh music. Onwards, -CP P.S. If you want to get deeper into the real nitty-gritty with some more of my personal writing, you can follow me over at Substack. P.P.S NEW T SHIRTS! Old CD’s. It’s hard to get the news out there. And now that I’ve got your attention: we’ve got some shows and what-not to announce. And man, this newsletter helps get the word out. I can also tell you from experience that this newsletter beats the dog doo out of going around from city to city with a staple gun, plastering posters on telephone poles all over creation. And, come to think of it, it’s better for the planet, too. I’m looking forward to taping a Mountain Stage in Walnut Creek this Thursday with the Make Out String Quartet. Walnut Creek? That’s a long way from West Virginia. Just sayin’. What else can I say? If you’re lucky enough to have tickets, we will see you there. Honestly, beyond that, I’m always a little confused with the whole consult-your-local-listings part of it… you’re smart. You’ll figure it out. As usual, there’s some great folks on the bill, too. Like Ramblin’ Jack Elliot. We’re psyched. I am happy to inform you that this will be my 11th Mountain Stage appearance. There’s a little Mountain Stage in everything I do. I never want it to end when I’m there. Last time - if you remember - I shoved a couple interns into a flight case and rolled those kids right out of there. I’ve got them chained up in the basement now. They write my tweets! One of them is writing this newsletter. VALENTINES DAY! This Valentine’s Day, we’ll be at the Swedish American Hall in San Francisco and two days later at HopMonk in Novato. Why not make it a date with Chuck Prophet, Stephanie Finch (Bride of Chucky), Vicente Rodriguez, and The Make Out String Quartet? That’s right. Guitars, keys, drums, and strings – all tied together with sheet music. This anti-V-Day event with The Make Out Quartet will be HOT HOT HOT. No heat lamps necessary! And I will officially confirm the rumor I started myself – these two shows will sell out. (In fact, the show at HopMonk already has!) You guys know I’m a serious Rubinoos fanboy, right? I’m not some bubblegum nerd or Power Pop weirdo. And neither are they. But one thing the Rubes are is true to their school, whether it’s Spaghetti Western soundtrack music, The Beach Boys, or the DeFranco family, or worse. They wear it on their sleeves. Believe me when I tell you: They’ve taken the heroes journey, they’ve gone up the mountain and talked to the elephant and brought back more than a T Shirt from the front lines. Every Rubinoos show is like the last one. This Friday, I’ll be your DJ at The Chapel. It’s an all 45 RPM party, I’ve got lined up for you. So come see the Greatest Band In The World with the added bonus that I’ll be spinning records between sets. It’s up to you. Again, I can only recommend – not insist – how you spend your entertainment dollar. But if you’re anything like me, you wouldn’t miss a chance to take in the sights and the sounds of the Rubes at The Chapel. Dare I say it: for unfettered excellence, it’s the safest bet in showbiz. Also, aside from my DJ career, Onto the next disaster, Onwards, -CP P.S. Some substantial seismic musical activity to report as we swing out of one year and into the next. Here’s a preview before I dig deeper—and go wide screen, too. We have tour dates, including the Kennedy Center. Plus a Mountain Stage performance right here on the Left Coast. There’s also a Summertime Thing Festival in the works. Oh, and a new record in the making. (Knee deep in the Cumbia. That’s right, it’s happening, so don’t try to stop it!) Valentine’s (or Palentine’s) Day shows, too. And as if that’s not enough, like they say on game shows (are there still game shows?), yours truly will be represented by some visual cut-and-pastes at a real live Art Exhibition. (No, that is not a typo.) In the Southland. The desert, to hone in further. Not so far from Coachella, actually. All this and more. In no particular order, unless an order presents itself in spite of my stream-of-consciousness tendencies… Let’s start completely out of my comfort zone, with the Art Exhibition. Some of you know I like to play around with scissors and glue. To make collages. Not because I’m great. Because I can’t help myself. It keeps me busy in my “writing room.”* When the guitar isn’t talking to me. And maybe it also forces me to look at things differently. As it turns out, it’s also a great way to keep my hands busy and let a mix just kind of roll over every inch of me. Anyway, I will be showing my collage art in a star-studded group show in the greater Palm Springs area. MAD.KAT Gallery in Rancho Mirage to be exact. March 16 to April 21. Out there by the Elephant Car Wash, or so I’m told. It all looks pretty formidable. Intimidating even. Joan Baez and Penelope Houston will be included. But that’s a couple months down the road. Still and all, I’d better get busy! Meanwhile back in Gigsville USA: for those of you paying attention, I’ve been instructed to mention I have solo and duo shows in January. In Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia. Including a duo show with Stephie at the Kennedy Center in DC. I’m looking forward to returning to the 30A Songwriters Festival. Personally, I love Florida. There’s a quality to the light. It’s kind of like California, but with Cuban sandwiches in lieu of tacos. I can’t wait to join a host of great sinner/songwriters at the 30A Fest, and of course, I’m always happy to see all my WMNF’ers in Tampa. Not to be sneezed at, there’s also Mountain Stage, coming to Walnut Creek on February 1st. Looks like the The Mission Express and I will be part of the show they’ll be taping featuring Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Colin Hay and more, with host Kathy Mattea. We’ve been schlepping our bums to West Virginia for donkey’s years, as they say on the Angry Island. Nice of Mountain Stage to come to us for once. #AlmostHeaven File Under Get-Your-Tickets-Now – this Valentine’s/Palentine’s Day, make it a date and come and celebrate with us at the Swedish American Hall in San Francisco and HopMonk in Novato. Us being Chuck Prophet, Stephanie Finch, Vicente Rodriguez and The Make Out Quartet. (This is the string quartet we shot videos with during lockdown, in case you missed it.) Who knows, this might just become a tradition. (Maybe there’s something to this whole Palentine’s Day thing? If you’re single and/or sick of the commercialization of Valentine’s Day, spend the day hanging out with your best friends. I mean, not everyone I know is lovey dovey. Those folks deserve a day, too.) Breaking News: You heard it here first. The Summertime Thing Festival. Yessir, I’ll be curating a Music Festival in Guerneville, CA on Saturday, June 29. Some days I call it an “office.” It’s actually an overpriced shoebox on Market Street sandwiched between the Loin and SOMA. I enjoyed some time off. Did some hanging with family in lower California and caught some waves with my bud Gina at C Street Ventura. Did some songwriting too. Got a mess of go-to-the-head-of-the-class kind of jams piling up around here. So, there is that. But now we’re back in the van. In fact, this Friday, September 22, we’re playing The Greek Theatre in Berkeley. Guests of The Steve Miller Band don’t you know. We’re gonna play some songs. Or maybe they’ll play us. We’ll see. And then there’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, which every October proves there’s never been a better time to sit on a blanket in a meadow. Friends, we want to take you where that funky grass grows. And tell you why you should be sitting on it. Because it’s true. I’m here to confirm the rumor I started. Meanwhile, this very weekend I’ll be playing a couple Basement Tapes shows in San Luis Obispo and Sebastopol with the Casual Coalition. They’re an all-star Bay Area band featuring members of The Mother Hips, Phil Lesh & Friends, and Stu Allen and the Mars Hotel. I wouldn’t be back in your inbox so soon if things weren’t moving a little too fast for me to keep up with. In between our Euro Tours with the Mission Express, I played The Hipnic Festival in Big Sur with Cumbia wizards ¿Qiensave? Our Hipnic set was inspired. Impromptu. An inspired mess. Some would say an accidental triumph. Everybody brought their Cumbia shoes. We blew through the Fernwood Campgrounds like a cool breeze. In fact, we had such a blast, we’ve decided to try it again. A little closer to my home turf. At the Cafe Du Nord. San Francisco. Next Monday, July 17. ¿Qiensave? has even got me driving to Salinas just so we can kick out the jams together. That’s right, we’re even rehearsing for this one! So you might want to be there. You heard me right, people ¿Qiensave? is coming to town, all the way from the Central Valley. To down-but-not-out San Francisco. To bring their magic down those seen-it-all stairs to the Du Nord. On a Monday night. And they’ve invited me to front the band for the first set. Hard to describe the surf rock from the barrio sound they stir up. You’ve got to hear it to believe it. Personally, I’m so doggone thrilled I could drink a pitcher of margarita mix. Expect new songs – some new to you, some new to me! Again, I’ll be playing with them the first set. So get there early. If that’s something you might want to be a part of. We’ve got other shows to announce, too. The Land That Time Forgot USA Revisited Tour. [Okay, a few shows now and a few more later. We’re on a budget!] Get your tickets now. I hope this reaches you. I hope we’re all here. Present and accounted for. I asked my manager Daniel Strickland to queue this newsletter up a couple days ago. I hope he’s still alive. I hope we’re all still alive. [Insert lame AI joke here. Or don’t. Actually, please don’t.] (Editor’s note: Daniel is alive and well in London.) Myself and the Mission Express are looking forward to heading over the pond to play for our friends in Norway, Spain, Paris and the rest… with festivals here and there in points in between. But mostly we’ve got a boatload of UK dates. I’m looking forward to getting back to the UK with the unsafe-at-any-speed Mission Express. Plus we’ve got Kris Gruen in tow for pretty much all of it, I think. Kris is a good dude. Some of these rooms listed below in the UK, I recognize. Some I’m not so sure about. All I know is that it’s been a while. And in the immortal words of that Nobel Prize-winning song and dance man himself: “The best sound you can get is an intimate club room, where you’ve got four walls and the sound just bounces. That’s the way this music is meant to be heard.“ ––Bob Dylan Well, I see a few of those in the mix. People will have you believe that we live in a time of cultural exhaustion. I’m not exhausted. I’m still out here trying to get from place to place. Checking the surf report and enjoying a few great thrift stores along the way. (But not as many as I used to). Hope to see you out there. And yes, I know. These tour dates have been duct taped back together so many times it’s not funny, if you find it confusing, that’s OK. I do, too. Meanwhile, while I’ve got your attention, here’s an interview with our own klipschutz. klip gets grilled here by Poetic Justice on a number of topics including The Land That Time Forgot, Latin envy (Catullus in the original) and the second coming of Fast Kid. klip also recommends three co-writes from the 1990s you need on your playlist now. It’s a great read. Even I learned some stuff. Read the interview HERE. You know me. At this point I’m usually running around looking for 9V batteries and some of that vitamin C powder. Or at the very least trying to find some decent gaffer tape. I like the kind that doesn’t leave a big ol’ sticky mess behind. Oh, and this time around, the doctors gave me some paxlovid. Yeah. Membership has its privilege. And yeah, COVID is still a thing. Also, before we head out on another deep trek into the old world. I want to mention that I had a ball playing in the New World: Big Sur over the weekend with my friends Qiensave from Salinas at the Mother Hips annual Festival known as Hipnic. Everybody brought their Cumbia shoes. And the weather was breathtaking, too. The soft sea breezes, the waves splashing down on the Big Sur sands. The redwoods. My cabin in the woods, courtesy of Britt and his (((folkYEAH!))) peeps. All of it! Okay, I look forward to getting out there and bringing it. Some shows are SOLD OUT or nearly so, so get your tickets now. Also, beware of scalpers in the parking lot. Don’t let it go pear-shaped, good people. We’re back after six years away. Did you miss us? We missed you. Now listen up, don’t write this mouth breather off just yet. I’ve been to the doctor and he says I’m healthy as a horse. So look out! I’ve got an army behind me in the form of The Mission Express. All we wanted were a few gigs to sink our gums into and now it’s all this – 33 shows in 13 different countries including 7 festivals. Plus we’ll be carrying a pallet of “Live in Paris from 2017” on CD with 13 career spanning tracks. This will be available only at our shows. Join us why don’t you? We’ll be out there kicking high and wide, far and near. With shows and songs we’ve never even played before we’re dying to play for you. Gigs all over creation with the tour coming to a close at the Kilkenny Festival in Ireland. We’re going a long way to kiss a leprechaun, people(!) Stephie, Vicente and I had a ball rampaging through the Wild East on our Trio Tour culminating in our SOLD OUT show on Valentine’s Day with the Make Out Quartet at the Swedish American Hall here in San Francisco. But once again, we’re gassing up the Econoline and taking the Mission Express out to the people. Starting this Tuesday in Des Moines and heading down into into parts unknown and then coming in for a landing with a three show stand at our home away from home in Austin – the Continental Club. Just now, I’m sitting here listening to Bob Dylan’s “Fragments” and enjoying a cuppa. One minute Bob’s singing about how the best advice he ever got was to “Go home and lead a quiet life.” And then he turns around and asks: “You ever feel just like your brain’s been bolted to the wall?” You go lead a quiet life, Bob. I’ve still got dreams to fulfill, you know? Sure, I’ll probably never own a guitar with my name written on the fretboard in mother of pearl, but we’re not ready to fold up the tent just yet, either. Note the cluster lunch of gigs below. What else am I gonna do? At least I’m halfway good at it. And nobody has a better band. (And on a personal note, nobody has a better band.) Nothing is wrong, everything’s right. We’ll be out there giving ourselves, all for you, night after night, so won’t you be there with us when the deal goes down? Again, I won’t insult with indecipherable links. You know what do to from here, right? Dig in with both hands. Onwards, - CP P.S.
