I Came to Mill Valley on a Rocket Ship

CP & the ME returned home this weekend for a rollicking show at the venerable Sweetwater. The crowd was ready for the show and got a good dose of the good thing - a pre-Lenten splurg (a fine poetry reading). After a killer "West Memphis Moon" I heard some guy lean over to his friend and say: "This place hasn't rocked like that in years." Here's the set: - Boogie Shoes - Monkey in the Middle - Just to See You Smile - Solid Gold - I Bow Down... - Credit (nice to see this dusted off) - After the Rain (yes, with the mouth-to-mouth resuscitation vocals - a real audience pleaser) - Primo - Heartache (?) (a Stephie cover, perhaps a precursor to a Go Go inclusion) - Do Right Woman ("We did that one for Jim.") - Shore Patrol - Age of Miracles - W. M. Moon - You Did (the metaphysical question) - Summertime Thing (a return to the original version...) Encored with: - Rocketship (with Stephatronics) into... - Automatic Blues - Elouise Great set. Great night. Really good-time vibes. KT Smith on bass was all up-beat bop and bounce, dropping little bass bombs in between the guitar dance; Jeff Anthony on guitars pulled that third note out of the dueling guitars - and the slide was sweet; Stephanie just dropped everyone to their knees with a soaring rendition of "Do Right Woman" (a too rarely-played tune that Steph just owns - as she does "Walk On By." As Chuck said, "How do I follow that?" - and then jumped into a crazy attack at "Shore Patrol"). Then there was Jim B. on drums. Jeeze. There was just this whirlwind of flying arms and sticks - scared the hell out of KT as pieces of wood flew past his head. Man, that guy rocks. Oh, and, Chuck. All you can do is shake your head and laugh... how does he do it... and he didn't break one string! Age of Miracles indeed. Heather Combs did a fine opening solo set - as she did last time CP played the Sweetwater. She's great. Got a great reception for her rhythmic jams and fine tunes. Then she ended up with KT and Jim on stage with her for a crowd pleasing (yes, singing too) "Joker." I hope someone recorded the show... if so, please let me know (were you there Lefko?).

I knew Chuck way back when in SF, CA

i was just talking to a friend at work about how we haven't been in touch with the local scene much and i said, how i loved to hear chuck prophet play at the albion back in 1989 in san francisco's mission. he played with another amazing musician, steve yurke (sp?) who since moved onto austin, tx ... who later played with johnny cash, one of his all time idols at the great american music hall ... anyway, i hadn't followed chuck in all these years, just heard his hit, a summertime thing and was so glad he was seeing the light of day! his voice is amazing! artistry truly unique. so i looked him up after all this time and to see he's playing with aimee mann in atlanta tonight blew me away ... she's one of my all time faves as well ... sorry to hear you're not around the bay area at the moment chuck .... i'd love to see you again soon. cheers from a fan from way back when .... your music moves me, so glad you're following your gift.

Orange Peel Setlist

1. Dylan cover [after some banter with a WNCW deejay, reciprocal introductions] 2. "Solid Gold" [with the distorted mike providing the missing Finch vocals] 3. "Rise" [as Chuck's "biographers" from Winston-Salem film him on stage] 4. "Baby Just To See You Smile" [with nod to Kim Carnes, who provided the "kinkiest" moment of Chuck's life by putting this on her new record] 5. "Lucky" [alternate arrangement] 6. "Who Put the Doo Wop. . ." [prefaced by talk of the "metaphysical question" posed by this song] 7. "I Bow Down and Pray to Every Woman I Meet" [before which Chuck's line about "premature ejaculation" makes quite a splash with Asheville's lesbian contingent, out in full force in a city second only to Atlanta in the South for this demographic] 8. closing instrumental during which Chuck thanks Amy and the world

Vocal effect

I recently saw Mr Prophet in Montreal and was very, very impressed by his "too short" set. I loved the effect he had on his second mike. Is there any info available as to what effect and/or mike he was using to create that sound? Keep up the great work Chuck...Age of miracles is an amazing album.

Jammin’ Java show

Had the good fortune of catching Chuck solo in Virginia. Obviously, a very different feel then with the band, but his artistry shines. I am truly blown away by his talent and consider him to be one of the finest musicians I've ever heard.
