Thanks, Richard. I've been watching a copy on ebay, but the prices seem to go quite high there, so I will order a copy from the link you posted. At the second Borderline show, Stephie did a beautiful version of another Howard Tate song. It was great to hear her get a chance to sing (in response to much prompting from the audience!)... she's incredibly soulful. I thought the second night was maybe not quite as intense as the first, but it had its own high points - a fantastic version of abandoned love being probably the highest. Interesting, Memphis moon - which was ferociously pissed off on Tues, sounded deeply sad and bitter last night. It's an incredible song. Was it my imagination, or did Chuck forget the words to a couple of songs last night? Luckily Stephanie was there to set him right. All in all, two amazing nights, two of the greatest gigs of my life. Come back soon, guys. Stevie |

Stevie, Glad I could help with the Howard Tate CD. I bought myself it a couple of weeks ago, actually. I'd heard Chuck and Stephie do "Shoot 'em All Down" many times at shows here in the SF Bay area, without knowing the source. Then someone else on this board was asking where it came from, and I decided to look it up. I agree with you -- Stephanie has a really great voice for soul, and I wish she'd do more. I posted some months back about a show in Berkeley where they did a stunning version of the Dan Penn/Chips Moman song "Do Right Woman - Do Right Man" (Recorded by Aretha in '67). I shouted out for it at a couple of shows after that, but to no avail. Eventually I asked Stephie before one of the shows if they would play it, and she said that with the new band members, they hadn't learned it yet. So maybe one day... If you are the Winchester-based Stevie I suspect you are, I'm impressed that you made two consecutive London shows in mid-week! I grew up in London, and went to University in Southampton, and I wouldn't want to make that drive two nights in a row. I'm hoping you took the train! Anyway, thanks again for the show reviews. It's good to know that the tour is going well. Richard |

Thanks for the link to the Tate CD, Richard. I had been watching a copy on ebay, but I will try the store you suggest. The second night in London may have lacked a little of Tuesday's intensity, but it was also a longer show, with a beautiful take on Abandoned Love (when some time earlier Chuck had asked the audience, "any questions so far?", I was going to shout back "Can you remember all the words to Abandoned Love?" - as it turned out, he could). There were a couple of times, though, when he had to exchange a quick word with Stephanie to be reminded of what came next on a couple of the newer songs! The other treat on Wed was Stephanie getting to do a song herself - another Howard Tate number, which sounded beautiful. A couple of other things - Memphis Moon was somehow different: Tuesday it sounded ferociously pissed off, on Wed is was more sad and bitter. Still no real oldies in the set (I was hoping for Look Both Ways). The show was looser, with some departures from the setlist, I think. Lots of great stuff with the bullet mike again. All in all, I think they were the best shows I can remember Chuck doing in the 12 yrs I've been following him - even better than the "high on cough medicine and preacher schtick" show at Underworld in 1999, and that's saying something. Hope they make it back here again soon. Stevie |
