C’mon dudes and dudettes

Chuck and co. plays a big gig in San Francisco and not a peep from anyone who attended. There has got to be someone who frequents this BB that attended the show. Please I'm beggin' ya. Was it a packed house, did they rock, setlist, what songs did Steph play---anything would be much welcome.

I was actually in SF that night. We came from NH/VT to see Phish out at Berkeley and I noticed Chuck was playing. Since they had an early curfew out at the Greek we made it in time for the last 40 minutes or so. There were only about 100 people there when we got there, which I was shocked at. I grabbed a set list off the stage on my way out because I was curious but I could tell they strayed. Holdin On was listed before the acoustic part and it was actually after it. I think we caught Doubter, Holdin On, then the encores were Bangkok and You Did. Not 100%. Here's the list anyway (verbatim): Intro/Sonny L Just to See You Bali Love Won't Keep Us Storm Monkey/Lucky You Been Gone Dyin' All Young Good Time Crowd Holdin On Acoustic (Summertime/WYLM/LFR/Pin a Rose) Intros Doubter Queen Bee Hot Talk LFR You Did (Always A../Bangkok/I'm Not Talking/For You/Styro)

It's a little known fact that, before he made it big, David Gray opened for Chuck at the Borderline in London in the early nineties. I'm sure CP will confirm this.

There was a 1974 documentary that Chuck Berry was on last night and I was amazed all the over-the-top references Chuck made to urinating and such. One ad-lib type lyric was, "we did it in the kitchen, we did it in the hall, I got some on my finger and I wiped it on the wall" while gesturing wiping his finger on the wall. It certainly was a different time back then...

Found a copy on Saturday, cheers for the heads up Jorge. Double bonus I have now found a guitar mag with a subject the better half is interested in. Now all I have to do is persuade a few other guitar mags to run interviews with Chuck :o)

Solo Gigs

So can anyone out there report on the solo gigs? Is anyone out there? Just nod if you can hear me.

Any reports from Club Cafe in my hometown of Pittsburgh? Playlist, how many folks showed-up, did they have Iron City on tap?

I can tell you that Chuck rocked Philadelphia all by himself. He "let freedom ring" just two blocks from the Liberty Bell-- how cool is that? It was amazing.

People should definitely check out the solo shows! He was great (no surprise) in VA playing fun versions of old and new songs. I wish he would have played B'more, I would have braved I-95 to see him a second night.

Chuck rocked the club in Pittsburgh! Fantastic show; standing room only. 1st time hearing CP solo & agree w/Jean..he rocked it all by himself. So happy I could catch this gig. Great story telling and interaction w/audience. Thanks for coming to Pittsburgh, Chuck...looking forward to the next time!

He absolutely ROCKED the Jammin' Java in Vienna, VA. Great between song chatter too. Great pacing. I didn't realize he was going to be solo when I arrived at the venue but now am glad I got to experience him solo. The club was electric! He's the best!

His solo shows are a great opportunity for Chuck to showcase his exceptional talents as a singer/songwriter. One man, one guitar, and two mics (he can't live without the squawky one). He really tears it up. I like that he finds new ways to interpret his classics and is not afraid to experiment on the fly. Add in the hilarious banter between songs -the story about Ryan Adams had the place roaring - and you have one hell of a show. It is hard to fathom how someone this good has flown under the radar for so long but the upside is that you get to enjoy him in intimate venues. What a treat.

Chuck, I saw you at Club Helsinki a few years back - it holds a special place in my heart. I wish I could relive that night, even more, I'd love to see you play live again. (ANYWHERE in the NE would be great!)

New Club Helsinki in Hudson Ny

Chuck on your next pass thru the East see if you can book a night playing Club Helsinki In Hudson NY. What was once a tiny little gem in Great Barrington Mass that you played in the past is now a big beautiful gem in the heart of Hudson with a big stage, room to groove and great sound. About 1hour from the Iron Horse in N.Hampton Mass and another 45 to an hour to Bearsville. I'll lug the equipment to all three.

How far is Club Helsinki from Boston, MA?? I would be interested in that place b/c I am 100% Finnish., and Chuck's #1 Boston fan.

I'm still wondering what kind of name Chuck Prophet is. He really is a mystery man. I wish he'd let someone write a book about him. I'm sure it would be a real page turner.

He and Stephanie were subjects in a book that came out about six years ago. I forget the name of the book (someone here will remember). It was written by Denise someone (again, someone pls. fill in). Anyway, you're welcome!

Oh, and I think Chuck's name is just his name. He never struck me as mysterious at all...that's one of the things i liked about him. What you see is what you get...just a guy doin' his thing. I'd like to read the book he'd write.

They were subjects for the chapter of a book titled, "Rip It Up" written by Denise Sullivan, copyright 2001 and published by Backbeat Books out of SF. Chuck, I imagine you read this. I was with you when you received a copy of this book for the first time. You perused it while we were having lunch of chicken sandwiches and lemonade on Valencia street. If you remember who you were sitting with, you'll receive a full time membership in the Memory Motel. Word.
